2025 UT ASTA Chamber Music Competition

Requirements:
Preliminary Recordings Deadline: October 4, 2025
Final Round: October 25, 2025 – Weber State University

Eligible ensembles
Any string chamber ensemble combination of two to eight players comprised of any combination of string duet, trio, quartet or quintet as well as mixed groups of strings with piano without doubling of any parts, or parts in accompaniment only.
Coach of ensemble must be an ASTA member OR in senior category, at least two members of the ensemble must be student chapter ASTA members.

Repertoire (two recorded pieces are required for preliminary round)
1) Required piece: one movement from a string chamber work (simplified or arranged versions only in junior category)  from the Classical Period or 18th century or equivalent
2) One contrasting own choice; multi-movement allowed if the movements are short and can be fit in to the time limit

Total Performance Time
Senior Division - 20 minutes  (18 -26 years - undergraduate college student)
Junior Division - 15 minutes  (17 years and younger)  
     Ensembles with members from both age groups are allowed to enter the senior category


Time limits are suggestions only. Recordings and performances under the minimum will not be disqualified. Nevertheless, contestants are encouraged to fully utilize the performance time to feature themselves in the best possible light. Recordings or performances exceeding the maximum will be stopped, but entrants will not be penalized.

Further repertoire guidelines and considerations
a) Complete works or complete single movements from works will be required of all competing groups.
b) No composer may be represented more than once in each contestant’s program. Multiple movements of the same work are permitted but two composers MUST be represented.
c) Senior Category Music chosen should be original (not arranged/simplified)
Junior Category may be arranged/simplified

Preliminary Recording
a) The required repertoire must be included. Other works presented on the recording may be different from those performed in the live Final Competition.
b) Recordings must be in video format. Please upload it to YouTube and submit the link of your video. Each piece or movement must be recorded without editing. Edited performances will be disqualified. Contestants should submit as high quality recording as possible.

The first-prize winners will perform in the ASTA Midwinter Conference on February 5, 2026 (Thursday) in St. George at Utah Tech University
